Let's re-do a room!

We have a room we call "the Fireplace Room".  It is a pass-through room between the Living Room (where you enter our house) and the stairs (which are bizarre in a way you only find in old houses).  I think when a room is so under-utelized that you don't even have a name for it, it's time for a change, don't you?  It's time to do something about it.  Without further ado, I give you:
The Fireplace Room
I have what is quite possibly the ugliest fireplace in the world, don't I?  Kind of hard to believe that we've lived for three years with it this way.

This not-large, narrow room has some things that we will change in the future; we plan to open up the wall between the living room and this room, center the window, adding a second one in the process, and open up the stair wall, adding a landing a few feet up.  This isn't happening yet-- but I just can't stand living with it the way it is.

So I'm here to see what a (teeny!) tiny budget, a little elbow grease and some ingenuity can get us.  Won't you join me in the process?

First up: fabric!

My dear friend and I had a day of thrifting a few weeks ago.  We hit yard sales, a bunch of thrift stores, and then she took me to Heaven.  Where all the fabric is $3/yard.  I scored some oatmeal colored Eathan Allen linen, scrim-backed, and the two geometric patterned green fabrics.  Then at the Habitat ReStore we found stacks and stacks of samples (perfect for pillows) for .50cents per.
 Now we're cooking with gas.

Next up: shopping in the attic.
Where the contents of Greensboro's thrift stores go to die.

Today we're buying this lamp:
and this camel saddle.
Next up: seating.
Mmm-- this is nice.  Needs a little work, though.  But he has a great twin brother.  Twins are good.

And this one.  So the $3 fabric store sells hides.  That's green buttery leather you see there, on top of some truly hideous orange velvet.

Let's play hide and seek.  I'll hide, you seek.

Are you in?

I can't wait to see the finished fireplace room. I'm not much of a lamp person, but I *heart* that one!

Great colors. I bet the room will be fabulous. I agree with Joy--the lamp is terrific.
