Pantry Re-do-- from Egad to O.M.G

Our pantry.  Oh, my goodness.  We are very lucky to have a great walk-in pantry-- about 6 feet deep, with room for shelves on both sides.  When we moved in, my sweet husband installed great floor-to-ceiling shelves, and we got to work stocking away.  And stock we did.  Three years after moving in, this is what it looked like...
Oh boy.  And I took out the 40 lb. bag of dog food that was in there.  And my vacuume.  Eesh.

I've been inspired by Lauren over at Pure Style Home to try some small organizational projects to make our house function a wee bit more smoothly.  Things have gotten a little out at elbows around here since Hoot Baby came into the picture-- whose idea was it to start a business with a newborn and a two year old? :)  I've decided to focus on things that are most relevant to our home, even if they differ from her weekly projects.  And this project was one that most certainly should NOT have been put off another day!

So I took everything out and piled it in the dining room....
(notice those streamers from Grady's birthday three weeks ago.  Looks like the pantry isn't the only room that needs attention...)  I had no choice but to finish up in one day-- NOBODY could live with a mess like this!

Using a gallon of mis-tint paint in a beautiful grey-blue that I bought for $5.00, I went to work.  The entire pantry got a coat of the paint (in an eggshell finish), including the shelving, shelving brackets and the ceiling.  After some sorting and purging and containing, here's our pantry today...
Much, MUCH better!  I still have quite a bit of tweaking to do, but now I know what is in there that needs tweaking instead of just seeing a mountain of stuff.  (And sorry for the flash photography.  Apparently it's not really possible to photograph a closet with a flourescent light in a hallway with no windows!)
One side of the pantry-- with the deepest shelves, holds all my pretty little things-- milk glass, platters, lovely little glass containers, vases and accessories.  I love how they are all in one place now so that I can see them easily, ready for me to grab something when I'm getting ready for a party, or just want to freshen up the house.
The other side holds canned goods (we don't have many of those-- does BPA scare you as much as it scares me?), bottles of vinegar, spices, and such, and our root vegetables.  I pulled as many baskets from around the house as I could find, but I'm starting to put good-sized baskets in dark wicker on my list when thrifting so they'll all match.  And I want a new rug (this one, maybe, in blue?)  and a schoolhouse light fixture, but those can wait for later.  For right now, I'm just so happy to be able to find a box of mac and cheese for the kids' lunch...

What's on your organizational "to-do" list?

Oh funny, I reorganized our pantry Sunday afternoon! Then yesterday the counter beside the sink that had accumulated a ton of junk. Today maybe other half of the counter.

My question is how do you accomplish such a huge task with two young children in the house? We would end up in the hospital from something one of my darling children consumed while I was busy organizing.

Wow! You are one busy Mama! I love the look of the "new" pantry. Very inspiring.

Anonymous-- I have a very, VERY wonderful husband. He took the kids upstairs to the playroom all day (it was freezing here) and I was able to go to the hardware store for paint in the morning, and then he cooked and put them to bed so I could finish up!
