THRIFT SCORE FRIDAY!

I have discovered a new occupational hazard, if you will.  I'm always, always digging for treasure-- if the price is right, if the bones are good, it must come home with me.  This is usually met with rolled eyes and sighs from my husband, especially when it comes time to unload it from the van.

Last week, I found a great, big mid-century dresser for an itty-bitty price.  I snapped it up, thinking I would take it into the booth after its facelift. Quite nice as it is-- but, in my humble opinion, this finish can stand a little freshening up. It looked a lot like this:

But that thing was H.E.A.V.Y.  Like, I think it might weigh as much as my piano heavy.  We had to take the drawers out (all 12 of them) just to get it out of the car, and when we got as far as the front sidewalk I decided that that sucker was never, ever going back into my van again.  Plus, my husband LOVED it.  That never, ever happens!  And so I brainstormed about where it could live at my house.

I have A LOT of table linens-- we use cloth napkins and placemats for each meal, and I have a huge and wonderful collection of vintage linens from my grandmother.  My napkin drawer looked like this--my kid are always digging around in there and messing up my folding.  Also, I really don't like my current buffet-- it's dark and heavy.

And after a few coats of lacquer and Verathane, now my dining room looks like this!

The handles were this hideous wood-grain plastic kind of stuff with brass sides.  I boiled them in a water/vinegar solution to help loosen up the junk on the brass before polishing, and lucky me, the plasticy stuff slid right off, leaving beautiful brass hardware!

So fresh and crisp now!  I decided to leave the small drawers in the side cabinets in the original finish, for a nice surprise when you open the doors.

I found a vintage glass chandelier with very clean lines (no danglies!) at a consignment shop a few weeks ago-- time to gussy up the old eatery!

Have a lovely weekend.  Mine will include lots of sun, lots of water, lots of laughing with friends, lots of baseball, and perhaps even a Tom Collins or two!
